What is SCAARFX™?

SCAARFX™ is the most advanced fractional CO2 laser mode available on the UltraFrax™ platform — engineered specifically for severe scar revision where standard resurfacing protocols are insufficient.

While ActiveFX™ and DeepFX™ are designed for skin rejuvenation and moderate scar improvement, SCAARFX™ is purpose-built for life-changing intervention in severe, debilitating scars. It delivers the deepest fractional laser penetration available — reaching the deep dermis and hypodermis where severe scar tissue forms.

For patients living with burn scars, traumatic injuries, extensive surgical scarring, or disfiguring hypertrophic scars, SCAARFX™ can deliver results that were previously unattainable — dramatically improving both function and appearance.

⚕️ Medical Consultation Required

SCAARFX™ requires a thorough consultation with Dr. DeBias to assess scar type, age, and treatment candidacy. A personalized protocol is developed for each patient.

SCAARFX™ — The Science

SCAARFX™ uses ultra-deep fractional columns of CO2 laser energy that penetrate through the scar tissue — breaking down the disorganized collagen fibers, fibrotic bands, and tethering that cause scars to appear raised, sunken, or contracted.

The laser's thermal energy restructures the scar architecture from within: releasing tethering, stimulating normal collagen formation, improving perfusion, and allowing the skin to remodel toward a more normal appearance over months of healing.

IlaMed™ Clinical Publications

SCAARFX™ is backed by peer-reviewed IlaMed™ clinical data demonstrating statistically significant improvements in scar texture, pigmentation, and pliability across patient populations including burn survivors and trauma patients.

Scar Types SCAARFX™ Treats

SCAARFX™ addresses the full spectrum of severe scarring — from acute post-surgical healing to long-standing burn scars and traumatic injuries.

🔥

Burn Scars

Thermal and chemical burn scars — including contracted, hypertrophic, and discolored burns. SCAARFX™ delivers some of its most dramatic results in burn scar revision.

Traumatic Scars

Scars resulting from accidents, injuries, and trauma — including lacerations, abrasions, and crush injuries that have healed with abnormal scar formation.

🩺

Surgical Scars

Significant post-surgical scars including reconstructive surgery, mastectomy, thoracotomy, and other major procedures that result in prominent scar tissue.

📏

Hypertrophic Scars

Raised, thickened hypertrophic scars that remain within the wound boundary but are significantly elevated and often tender or pruritic (itchy).

🔴

Keloids

Abnormally raised scar tissue that extends beyond the original wound. SCAARFX™ combined with appropriate post-procedure protocols can reduce keloid bulk and symptoms.

🔲

Contracture Scars

Scars that cause tightening and functional limitation — particularly across joints. SCAARFX™ can improve tissue pliability and help restore range of motion.

How SCAARFX™ Transforms Scars

Scar tissue is fundamentally different from normal skin — understanding why is key to understanding how SCAARFX™ works.

The Problem: Disorganized Scar Collagen

Normal skin has collagen fibers organized in a basket-weave pattern — flexible, strong, and aesthetically normal. Scar tissue, by contrast, has collagen fibers laid down in parallel bundles — rigid, fibrotic, visually distinct, and often functionally limiting.

This disorganized collagen is the root cause of most scar problems: the raised appearance, the tight feeling, the discoloration, the texture difference. To truly improve a scar, you must address the collagen architecture itself — not just the surface.

This is precisely what SCAARFX™ does. Its ultra-deep fractional columns penetrate into and through the scar tissue, delivering controlled thermal energy that disrupts the disorganized collagen fibers and triggers new, more normally organized collagen formation.

The Solution: Fractional Remodeling

SCAARFX™ creates thousands of deep, narrow thermal columns through the scar tissue. Each column:

Disrupts Fibrotic Bands

Thermal energy breaks down the rigid fibrous bands that cause scar tethering, contraction, and the sunken appearance of depressed scars.

Stimulates Normal Collagen

The wound-healing response to the fractional injury deposits new collagen in a more normal, basket-weave orientation — gradually replacing abnormal scar tissue.

Improves Perfusion

Laser treatment stimulates vascular ingrowth into scar tissue, improving blood supply and normalizing the discoloration characteristic of scars.

Fractional Healing

Untouched tissue bridges between columns ensure rapid re-epithelialization — the key advantage of fractional over traditional ablative approaches in scar tissue.

Recovery & Realistic Expectations

SCAARFX™ is the most intensive protocol on the UltraFrax™ platform. Recovery is more extensive than ActiveFX™ or DeepFX™, but the results for severe scarring can be life-changing.

Preparation & Anesthesia

SCAARFX™ procedures may utilize topical anesthetic, oral pre-medication, or local anesthesia depending on the size and location of the scar. Dr. DeBias will determine the appropriate anesthetic protocol during consultation.

Days 1–7 — Active Healing Phase

Treated areas will be red, swollen, and may weep slightly. This is the active healing phase. Complete adherence to Dr. DeBias's post-procedure protocol is critical. Expect to significantly limit activities.

Week 2 — Initial Recovery

Most treated areas have re-epithelialized. Redness continues but fades gradually. Scar texture and pliability show early improvement. Sun avoidance is critical.

Months 1–3 — Progressive Remodeling

Scar architecture continues to remodel. Visible improvement in texture, color, and pliability. For some patients, multiple SCAARFX™ sessions may be recommended for optimal outcomes.

6–12 Months — Maximum Benefit

Full collagen remodeling complete. Final results — which can be dramatically improved appearance and function relative to pre-treatment — become evident. Many burn and trauma patients describe this as life-changing.

Medical Disclaimer: Individual results vary based on scar type, age, location, and patient factors. SCAARFX™ can significantly improve scar appearance and symptoms, but cannot completely eliminate scars or restore skin to its pre-injury state. Multiple treatment sessions may be required. Dr. DeBias will provide realistic expectations during your consultation.
